Saint Jerome - Leonardo da Vinci. 103x74

Some paintings by Leonardo - an artist, scientist, thinker of the Renaissance, remained, unfortunately, unfinished. But they are works in which the author’s intention is already fully visible, for example, the work “Saint Jerome”, performed at the level of underpainting.

The artist presented here St. Jerome - a religious thinker, translator of the Bible into Latin, an ascetic and ascetic, who retired to the desert, where he spent several years. The saint is depicted as a penitent, his eyes are full of supplication, with one hand he pushes the cloak thrown over his shoulder, and the other, swinging, he pushes back to hit himself with a stone in the chest. The muscles of a thin, ascetic face, shoulders and arms are tense, the leg is firmly on a large stone, Jerome became a cry to the Creator for forgiveness. In the foreground lies a lion, according to legend, who accompanied the saint since he, having met a sick beast in the desert, cured him. The wild animal submitted to the love and goodness with which God filled the soul of Jerome.

By and large, I agree with you. It just seems to some that they definitely need something to stand out from the crowd. And how to stand out is no longer important.

    And where do we stop?
